Yeah! I am officially a senior and I don't mean citizen. It is the third and final week and I am devoting it to my mental and spiritual health. There is guided meditation and counseling to facilitate the healing process.
"Total Health includes not only a feeling of wellbeing in the body but also a sense of comfort in terms of purpose in life. Spiritual connections, perceived happiness, perceived health, altruism, intellectual stimulation, restful sleep, time alone, pleasure and play, financial resources, movement, laughter, humor, normal eating, contact with nature, and the like." (J Robbison & K Carrier, The Spirit and Science of Holistic Health)
The two oldest known medical systems, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic (Indian) Medicine, are both holistic in nature. They consider the bio-psycho-socio-spiritual aspects of health in evaluating and treating a person.
In many texts of Chinese Medicine, for example, each organ has an associated emotion:
- Spleen & Stomach (worry, pensiveness)
- Liver & Gall Bladder (anger, frustration)
- Kidneys & Bladder (fear, shock)
- Heart & Small intestine (excess excitement "joy")
Excess of any of the above emotions will weaken the associated organs and affect the body in total. They also believe that organs are interrelated:
Liver looks after eyes, muscles and tendons, finger nails and aspects of the throat.
Spleen is production of blood, body flesh; helps hold all organs in place, holds blood in vessels, distributes fluids throughout the body and aids in nutrient intake.
Lungs are nose, breathing, skin, body hair, opening and closing of pores.
Kidneys work with brain, bones, cartilage, spinal cord, ears, teeth, head hair, reproduction (sex drive) and water metabolism.
Heart is tongue, circulation of blood, complextion and controls sweat.
See. I am not just hanging by the pool drinking wheatgrass juice. Hope ya'll find this as interesting and informative as I do. Can't wait to discuss this with my surgeons in Houston next week. NOT!
